Electrophysiology

Electrophysiology is a division of cardiology that tests, diagnoses and treats heart rhythm abnormalities. Dr. Antonio Navarrete specializes in cardiac electrophysiology here at Medical Consultants. Listed below is a description of the procedures Dr. Navarrete performs:

Invasive Procedures & Tests:

  • Electrophysiology Study (EP Study)

An EP study is conducted in order to measure exactly how the electrical impulses flow through your heart during a heart beat. A small catheter is placed inside your heart to record electrical impulses and to determine areas of abnormal electrical conduction information.

  • Radiofrequency Arrhythmia Ablation

This is a non-surgical procedure used to treat certain types of rapid heart irregularities or cardiac arrhythmias.

  • Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

This is a small device implanted into the upper chest area to accurately analyze and treat cardiac rhythm and arythmias. The ICD monitor senses the abnormal rhythm and sends one or more electrical impulses or shocks to the heart restoring normal rhythm.

 Non-Invasive Tests:

  • Tilt Table Test

Determines the appropriate treatment for patients who experience fainting or near fainting (syncope or presyncopy) symptoms.

  • Non-Invasive Programmed Stimulation (NIPS)
Tests the implanted defibrillator and/or treats certain types of cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.

Coumadin Clinic

The Coumadin Clinic at Medical Consultants was one of the first clinics of its kind in the state of Indiana. Clinic staff has specialized training in anticoagulation management including the management of Coumadin/warfarin and low-molecular weight heparins. The clinic utilizes face-to-face point of care testing as well as specialized computer software for anticoagulation management. The clinic averages more that sixty patient visits per day. The clinic maintains a high patient satisfaction rate and clinic staff provides on-going, patient specific education. Clinic supervisor, Jennifer Bow, has recently completed her degree as an Adult Nurse Practitioner, in order to expand clinic services and the ability to accept outside referrals. It is the only clinic in Indiana to have received the DREAM award for outstanding patient management.
